Become a Certified Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester
The BPAT certification is a professional credential issued by the California‑Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association (CA‑NV AWWA) that qualifies an individual to test backflow prevention assemblies in the field. It’s widely accepted by California and many local water purveyors — especially since CA‑NV AWWA’s certification program is accredited to national standards.
Step‑by‑Step: How to Earn Your AWWA BPAT Certificate
1. Meet the Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate that they are prepared and qualified to take the exam. Per the BPAT Candidate Handbook:
AWWA BPAT Exam Application
Training or Experience (pick one):
Training: Complete a formal cross‑connection/backflow course typically 36–40+ hours covering the expected range of knowledge before applying.
OR
Experience: Have two years of field experience performing backflow tests.
This ensures you have the classroom knowledge or practical experience needed to sit for the exams.
Note: The American Backflow Academy training course is not the certification itself — it prepares you to pass the AWWA BPAT exam. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion, which can be submitted to AWWA as proof that you meet the eligibility requirements.
2. Fill Out the Official Application
You must complete the BPAT Certification Exam Application and send it with supporting documentation. The application asks for your personal info, employment history, educational background, relevant training or experience, and proof that you meet the eligibility requirements.
3. Take the Two‑Part Certification Exam
Once your eligibility is approved, you’ll be scheduled to take two portions of the BPAT exam:
